I think this was a wonderful book and I really wish I could draw and write like this book was formatted because I would be filling notebooks full of this stuff! It made me so happy. Karen's monster-ness is SUCH an amazing metaphor that Ferris plays with in multiple ways, without it ever feeling like she's lost control. At times it is a representative of Karen's coming of age, of her burgeoning sexuality, of her perception of herself as "other"--non-white, queer, poor, etc. Because the book functions as a kind of notebook diary for Karen, we get to see how Karen views herself.
