Even at an early age, Anka moved from tragedy to tragedy, growing up in a brothel, forced into prostitution herself, and only able to escape the holocaust by turning to a man who abused her as a child. Karen’s brother Deeze and her mother, while loving, caring people, hide violent secrets, too. It’s a testament to Ferris’ characterization that we can see so many people’s worst sides, yet still understand them as complex people whose beauty shines out from the scars. I adored my reading experience with this. I don’t read enough graphic novels because when I do, I more often than not love every second of doing so. This one was particularly stunning Dueben, Alex (April 25, 2017). "My Favorite Thing is Monsters Author Talks 2017's Buzziest Graphic Novel". Comic Book Resources . Retrieved January 5, 2018. I think this was a wonderful book and I really wish I could draw and write like this book was formatted because I would be filling notebooks full of this stuff! It made me so happy. I didn't understand the story all of the way but who cares, I had fun =) No sólo la historia, sino su estructura, el arte, las ilustraciones, las referencias visuales a otras obras plásticas, la historia de Karen es preciosa pero dolorosa. Hoang, Lily (April 9, 2017). "Monster, Monster, On the Wall". Los Angeles Review of Books . Karen's monster-ness is SUCH an amazing metaphor that Ferris plays with in multiple ways, without it ever feeling like she's lost control. At times it is a representative of Karen's coming of age, of her burgeoning sexuality, of her perception of herself as "other"--non-white, queer, poor, etc. Because the book functions as a kind of notebook diary for Karen, we get to see how Karen views herself. She chooses to draw herself as a ambiguously-gendered werewolf, both to reflect the way society views her — as someone who is not white and gender-nonconforming — and the way she tries to own this perceived “monstrousness.” Johnston, Rich (February 10, 2018). she also writes outsider characters so freaking well, and not just limited to one kind of outsider experience, but all those little bits of physical difference or details or flaws or mistakes less-evident-to-others that set us apart or make us feel alone - there’s a character in here for that. which made it feel similar to Infinite Jest to me, but only in that one aspect. this isn’t a true panoply because it’s essentially told through one voice/perspective, but the range of encountered characters and the heavy smog of loneliness definitely made me think of IJ.McMillan, Graeme (July 21, 2018).
