About this deal

Their debut, ‘Remedy’, was a fantastic album, and one that transformed the band into UK chart stars on its release in 1999; but it was a record whose production was rooted fairly solidly in the UK underground of house and garage. Two years on, ‘Rooty’ took these inspirations, and added a hefty dose of Timbaland, Bollywood, Latin pop, jazz and Gary Numan. The result was a dayglo rainbow unicorn of an album that retained a sharp pop focus, even as it rummaged around under the sink for yet more sources of inspiration. ‘Rooty’ also threatened to break the band in the U.S., reaching number five on the Billboard dance album chart. It also briefly established Basement Jaxx as a serious rival to Daft Punk — whose own second album, ‘Discovery’, was released a few months earlier — in both commercial and critical appeal. After a series of EPs, the duo released their debut album, Remedy, in 1999. It went platinum in the UK and yielded two Top 5 singles: “Red Alert” and “Rendez-Vu.” In the US, both of those singles, as well as “Bingo Bango,” topped Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart. As the title for the album, it was explained by the duo as "raw" and "soulful", as well as "about being happy about things that don't fit in" and "things that are a bit different. That's why the album's got an albino gorilla on the cover." [2] Collaboration [ edit ] The name of the album is taken from Basement Jaxx's regular club event called "Rooty", held at a small bar in Brixton. The cover art features Snowflake, the world's only known albino gorilla.

The LP earned Basement Jaxx a Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album. Rooty’, Basement Jaxx’s second album, was the moment when the London duo conquered pop in the name of UK house music; the apex of the band’s gleefully magpie approach to musical inspiration, and the inexorable conclusion of the pop smarts hinted at on their debut ‘Remedy’. It's a collection of all our popular songs really, a collection where people could get all the main songs that they liked. It seemed like a good idea to put it out now because a lot of people were coming to our shows and didn't really know that a song like " Romeo" was by the same people who did " Where's Your Head At". Our music [across the years] is quite different so it has probably taken people a while to realise that it's all by the same band. So yeah, that was why really. It could be a collection for people who'd only just found out about us, or seen a live show and wanted to get our music. [1] Cases like this, and one would think countless gatherings around the world where Basement Jaxx is heard, show how easy It is to fall victim to their songs’ adrenalized charms.Despite heavy rainfall during the year's festival, the duo's performance was well received. [10] They also included a carnival version of Motörhead's "Ace of Spades" in their set.

Their 2001 sophomore album, Rooty, spawned two more Top 10 UK hits: “Romeo” and the rowdy “Where’s Your Head At,” which samples a pair of songs by UK New Wave hero Gary Numan.
