About this deal

Wood tapestry needles are usually the most expensive needle option. You can get less expensive ones that are less finished or pay more for hand carved needles finished with wax to make that can be more comfortable to hold. Your guide to sewing needle types also has a needle dimension chart that lists the length and diameter of all sewing needles.

These needles have been skillfully hand-carved using traditional craftsman hand tools. This gives each one a distinctive and authentic quality. Their smooth finish enables them to move through stitches with ease, making your work faster and more enjoyable. The needles are available in 19 different sizes. Crewel or Embroidery needles are medium length with a sharp point and a narrow eye. They come in numbers 1-12 and 6-8 are the most commonly used. They can be used for surface embroidery, crewel work, whitework and goldwork. Tapestry needles are used for a variety of crafts. In knitting and crochet, they are typically used to weave in ends and sew pieces together. They are also commonly used for needlepoint, cross-stitching, and plastic canvas. If you’re using multiple colors, be sure to weave in the ends for each color separately. Weave in the ends through a section with the same color to make the weaving as invisible as possible.

Depending on the type of craft or project you are working on will determine the type of needle you will require. Sometimes you may need to use the same needle type across a variety of sizes to complete your project or indeed you may require an array of different types of needle. So now that I have professed my undying love for the tapestry needle, I’m curious, is anyone out there weaving on a lap loom without one? I understand the big floor looms use shuttles and such, because it would be crazy to work all that warp with a tapestry needle. But for us lap loom-ers is anyone not using the tapestry needle? And if so what is your go to tool? Consider the brand and quality of the needle. Cheaper needles are cheap for a reason. They may not be as durable, or they may have rough edges that could snag your yarn. Higher-quality needles are often more expensive, but they will often last longer and provide better results.

Use the standard needle threader for threading cotton/thread and the chunky threader when using chunky yarn. So as you may have guessed the tapestry needles works similar to a sew needle, but instead of piercing fabric, you use the tip of the tapestry needle to weave yarn behind and in front of the warp thread. The ideal use of the tapestry needle is for small areas of weaving due to the fact that if you were to cover a large area you will need to pull a long yarn tail through your weave. There are other weaving tools that are better for working over large areas that I will cover in the next few weeks. Cut the yarn. After you finish off the last stitch of your project, cut the yarn leaving a long tail. You’ll want to leave at least 6″ of yarn to weave in. It is worth noting that there are ways to sew seams and join pieces that don't require a needle at all—you can use a crochet hook for some joining methods. There are several different types of tapestry needles available. Below, I have broken down the differences between the needles. When you understand the differences, you will be able to make an informed decision. I have also listed 5 unique types of tapestry needles that all crocheters should have in their stash.
