The practice of illumination—adding decoration to book manuscripts—dates back to the early fifth century. The colorful illuminated set, with it’s dot grid and gold illustrations, seems designed for more personal reflection and expression.By illuminating the text, artists beautified the pages of the Bible as a way to summarize, explain, and, ultimately, preserve its message. The bows, arrows, javelin, sword, sling, and crown illustrated here showcase the transfer of power and the battles that took place during the reigns of both King Saul and King David. The ESV Illuminated Bible places the full ESV text alongside over 500 elegantly hand-lettered gold ink illustrations by renowned artist Dana Tanamachi, encouraging readers to 'light up' the words of Scripture by adding their own artwork and color to each page. These are very different in appearance to the ESV Scripture Journal New Testament Set books but almost identical in size and layout.
