About this deal

In the thermometer, the brightly colored internal spheres rise and lower with fluctuations in temperature and corresponding density. Each bubble has a metal tag attached to it that indicates temperature, which also serves as a calibrated counterweight.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PRODUCT: Your sealed Galileo thermometer is filled with a common mineral-based, ozone friendly solvent (paraffin oil) to prevent bacterial growth. Designed with different colored spheres of varying densities, the thermometer is able to tell the temperature accurately. Sometimes a cluster of spheres floats by the top of the tube, and a cluster sinks to the bottom, while one sphere hangs in the middle.

Anne was published in the Journal of Chemical Education as a Co-Author, has an article in ChemEdX, and has presented twice and was published with the AACT. The process can become uncomfortable and special attention must be given to ensuring hygienic conditions. You can tell the temperature by reading the medallion on the middle floating sphere, if there are clusters of spheres at the top and the bottom of the tube, or with a few other tricks, depending on the configuration of the spheres.

Read more about the condition New: A brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged item in original retail packaging (where packaging is applicable). When the temperature rises, the liquid inside the Galileo thermometer becomes less dense and the colored spheres floating inside will sink towards the bottom. Based on the findings of Galileo Galilei himself, the Galileo Thermometer isn’t just beautiful to look at – it measures the temperature too. If that’s the case, read the temperature of the lowest sphere in the top group and the highest sphere in the bottom group. This is just what I was looking for in my barn apartment in the woods :) Just wish the thermometer, barometer and hygrometer could measure outdoors rather than indoors.

Anne has been teaching high school chemistry for over 20 years and is passionate about providing accessible and educational chemistry content. The blue and yellow bubbles (60 and 65 degrees, respectively) are calibrated so that they have higher densities than the water at this temperature, so they sink.Once the hand-blown bulbs have been sealed, their effective densities are adjusted using the metal tags hanging from beneath them. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Affixed to each sphere is a little metal tag that has a temperature level on it in increments of 2 degrees.

The Galileo thermometer works because of the principle of buoyancy, which states that objects that are denser than their surroundings sink, and objects that are less dense than their surroundings float. The temperature surrounding the thermometer will make the liquid in the thermometer more dense as it cools, or less dense as it heats up.For our Galileo thermometer, for any given density, some of the bubbles will float while others will sink. Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. The blue bubble (60 degrees) is the heaviest (densest) bubble, and each bubble thereafter is slightly lighter, with the red bubble being the lightest.
