About this deal

Other characters are relatively sketchy, probably mostly due to the book’s brevity (right at about 300 pages, nearly a short story in today’s fantasy market) and the breakneck pace. Hines manages to keep the story moving while squeezing in a powerful amount of exposition and backstory.

Gargle Blaster: One of the things that libriomancers do for fun is extract fictional drinks from books. Like Funke’s world, the magic in Libriomancer involves “pulling” from books; like Fforde’s series, the world of any book is a separate physical manifestation that can be accessed by those few with the ability; and like Butcher’s popular series, the world is filled with all kinds of creatures that the common populace knows nothing about. With the help of a motorcycle-riding dryad who packs a pair of oak cudgels, Isaac finds himself hunting the unknown dark power that has been manipulating humans and vampires alike.I think that's why i thought of it like a TV series, it was like Grimm and that sorta thing :) The characters were likeable and i enjoyed the humour. This is unclear though because you can use libriomancy to give yourself supernatural attributes or powers. Well, they could, but the most dangerous books are locked away and objects that could potentially destroy the world or alter events are not reachable. For example, extracting Harry Potter's wand does not grant the ability to actually cast any spells from those books. Which throughout the book I thought was made-up and kind of a goofy choice on the author's part, sounding like "eye-zay-ick.

But their plan could unleash a far darker power, an army of entropy and chaos, bent on devouring all it touches. When Matthew Swift in Kate Griffin’s urban sorcerer novels conjures up a powerful spell from the fine print on the back of an Underground ticket, it feels as if the world slips sideways for a minute; as if words and symbols do have meaning, and we don’t always know what all those meanings are.Because I didn’t feel any connection to the magic, I am giving this book three and a half stars instead of four, but I would still happily recommend it to any of my fantasy-reading friends.

What begins as a simple monster-slaying leads to deeper mysteries and the discovery of an organization thought to have been wiped out more than five centuries ago by Gutenberg himself. It's not The Neverending Story, it's not Inkheart, and it took the book about 150 pages before I actually started to like our hero. Two of our main characters were created by the libriomancers magic, that is to say they started off as characters in books and then were pulled into the real world. This isn't a case of not fighting for your love, it's him realizing that the fight will only make it harder on her and not fighting will make her happy. He hates Journey, loves Spongebob Squarepants and just generally gets to enjoy his own wacky fire-spider life. Any Libriomancer is a magician with the special ability to reach into books and bring forth anything from them: healing potions, ray guns, etc. I liked the characters, I liked that although the main character Isaac was sort of on the outs with his agency it wasn't because he had a big mouth or was an asshole. I, too, started with the intention to read a few pages but got hooked until it was getting light outside and I noticed the time was almost 6 a.
