When Granny discovers that the moon is melting—the dripping luminescent moon makes for a surreal and indelible image—she catches some drops in a bucket and whips up a batch of glowing moon pops, which cool everyone off. This story shows the compassion of a stranger to her neighbors and her creativity while trying to solve the problem of her neighbors struggling with the extreme heat. Not particularly persuasive, but this might coax a few young porkers to get their trotters into the tub. Each of the Lower Elementary classrooms did September projects based on Baek’s magical picture book. One sweltering summer night, while the many residents of one apartment building are struggling to fall asleep, the moon begins to melt.

It's an unusual style and a folktale I hadn't heard of and the combination makes it quirky but still a lovely unfolding of how we cultivate connection. I can say this as a sweeping remark, in my experience they offer a different perspective anywhere from the sense of humor to subject matter to the illustrations. This would make a great classroom read for young elementary school children learning about folklore from around the world. Instead of directly linking her behavior to understandable reactions of children to newness, the text undermines itself by making Lucy’s parents’ sweet reassurances impotent and using the grandmother’s scientific explanation of moonlight as an unnecessary metaphor. This (according to publisher description) is the first picture book for Heena Baek to be published in English (translated by Jieun Kiaer).I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. The children could describe the weather outside at the moment and compare it to the weather in the story. Moreover, younger audiences (any audiences, come to that) may wonder what the piggy’s watery closing “EUREKA!

Moon Rabbit is left homeless with the moon melted but Granny and makes a new moon for the rabbit from drops she saves. is the only resident to have noticed the moon dripping away to nothing, and she races outside to catch the drops to mix up a frozen treat: the titular moon pops, which are icy and sweet, melt away the heat. It’s wonderful to walk down the Lower Elementary hallway and see the brightly colored art the students did in response to their summer book, Moon Pops by Heena Baek. Dreamy illustrations are crafted from dioramas and cut-paper charcoal drawings, with a softly glowing candle-flame–colored moon and friends and neighbors who are a variety of creatures but all wearing summery human pajamas. Even though the power went out, everyone in the apartments slept well, the moon pops kept them cool. Moon Pops is a strange and delightful tale made for lingering over—and perfect for reading with your own moon pop. I loved Doerr’s earlier novel, All the Light We Cannot See, but had not gravitated to this one – until now.

That’s when the two moon rabbits showed up and Granny had to figure out how to rebuild their moon home using the last drops of the moon.

This means that you are getting something that can feel a bit “sophisticated” and maybe a smidgen “talking down” to the younger reader.
